Thank you for joining the LL family and becoming a Foster Carer.
Every animal deserves a chance to have a happy home.
Some animals come to care after being privately surrendered.
Some are strays who have been abandoned by their owners, others have never known what life can be like with a family.
Some are put on Death Row and sentenced to die within a few days, simply because they do not have a home.
We also have animals join us from the larger shelters. These animals have been shown they are not coping in the shelter environment and need to be in a foster home.
Each animal has it's own unique needs and it is important to check on any details we have before committing to taking that animal in to your care. Unfortunately not all details are always known by us. For example, a dog may be untested with cats so if you have cats it is imperative you have the ability to separate. Your Coordinator will have all known details available.
Being a small rescue we cannot move animals immediately but will try our hardest to do so as soon as we can.
Taking your foster animal to a shelter or another rescue is not acceptable and will result in you breaking your Foster Carer Obligations with Little Legs and also being blacklisted within the fostering network.
As you know, Little Legs is 100% volunteer run. Our Committee, Coordinators, IT and Fundraising Team all take time away from their families to help run Little Legs and save the animals. We rely on adoption fees & donations to keep our doors open.
When physical donations are received we first post them in the Carers Forum. Please comment on the post if you can use a donation for your foster animal.

A step-by-step guide to looking after your foster animal.
When an animal comes into our care, whether from RSPCA, AWLQ, Rural Pound or Private Surrender there are requirements and instructions that need to be followed.
WITHIN THE FIRST WEEK ⤵️
ALL cats & dogs, regardless of where they came to us from or regardless of the history provided, are required to have a HEALTH CHECK performed at one of OUR APPROVED VETS. This is so that we have a clear paper trail from our own vets attached to each animals internal file.
At the initial health check ALL dogs & cats who DO NOT have current certificates, either from their previous owner (please forward to your coordinator if the owner gives you any paperwork), AWLQ, Regional Pounds or RSPCA for Vaccination MUST be VACCINATED!
It is NOT enough that a surrender form states they are vaccinated. If there is no proof then we vaccinate.
At the initial health check ALL dogs ( excluding puppies under 6 months) MUST be HEARTWORM TESTED! It is NOT to be assumed that dogs are on regular heartworm prevention just because an owner says so. The same applies for Flea, Intestinal Wormers & Tapeworm prevention.
At the initial health check ALL cats ( excluding kittens under 6 months) MUST be FIV TESTED!
At the initial health check all dogs & cats suspected to be or advised to be already DESEXED and MICROCHIPPED must have this checked and confirmed by our vet.
If a vet gives you physical paperwork you must take a clear photo and forward to your coordinator asap so we can keep these on our internal database and ensure the animals records are up to date.
ANIMALS NAME⤵️
Most animals come to our care with a name, please, DO NOT CHANGE THIS NAME!
It becomes VERY MESSY if animals are listed under multiple names in our system and with vets! Please do not shorten, mispronounce or misspell animals names to our vets as it causes many issues.
AFTER INITIAL HEALTH CHECK AND THE FIRST WEEK⤵️
Once the initial health check is complete and vaccinations are complete (providing NO health concerns are detected) you are required to complete the FOSTER DOG or CAT QUESTIONNAIRE in as much detail as possible.
This questionnaire forms the adoption PROFILE and ALL information about the dog or cat, GOOD or BAD must be disclosed.
Try to be a little creative in the Blurb section of the Questionnaire and update regularly. This will be attached to every ad your foster animal will be featured in.
PHOTOS⤵️
You MUST provide your Coordinator with GOOD, CLEAR photos regularly!
These photos need to be of the best quality to help your foster animal get noticed and adopted. Photos that are blurry, from behind, too far away or otherwise are NOT acceptable as these will do nothing in promoting your foster animal to potential adopters.
~ PLEASE UPDATE PHOTOS AND QUESTIONNAIRES REGULARLY ~
Animals are promoted on our main Facebook page every week and if the same photos are being used week after week and your foster animal is getting no interest then usually it helps immensely to show NEW MATERIAL.
Photos should be uploaded to an album on the CARERS FORUM on Facebook.
When BOOKING VET APPOINTMENTS ⤵️
You must book them in at any of our approved vets, under OUR name Little Legs Dog & Cat Rescue Qld.
You must inform your Coordinator of the details of this booking, date and which vet. All appointments must be confirmed by your Coordinator or it is very likely the vet will not see you when you arrive for the appointment.
FLEA, WORMING & HEARTWORM PREVENTION ⤵️
ALL animals are required to be given regular Flea treatments, Intestinal Wormers, Tapewormers & dogs also require Heartwormers.
Heartwormers are ONLY to be given AFTER a NEGATIVE heartworm test and MUST be given STRICTLY every month on the same day throughout their time in care.
Treatments will be sent to your registered address 1-2 weeks before the due date. You will receive an email and/or text notification when an order has been prepared and again once Australia Post has it.
You must inform your coordinator when your foster has been treated. This enables our system to remain up to date and also means you will receive the next dose of treatments on time. If your coordinator does not know when an animal is treated, it is presumed they have not been done.
If it has been 2 weeks since you received a postage notification but no order has arrived, please notify your coordinator and we will arrange another order to be sent.
Each Monday you will receive a Foster Carer Medical Report. This will show you any standard treatments & vet work that are overdue.
BEFORE LEAVING OUR CARE ⤵️
ALL animals MUST be VACCINATED, DESEXED and MICROCHIPPED.
ALL animals MUST BE up to date on flea, worming & heartworm prevention.
ALL animals MUST BE paid in full, with proof before they can leave our care.
ALL dogs & cats will have a trial that starts the DAY they LEAVE CARE.
Dogs & Kittens can be returned to their carer within this 7 day trial for a refund minus $70.
Adult Cats can be returned to their carer within this 14 day trial for a refund minus $70.
AFTER LEAVING OUR CARE ⤵️
All vet papers, microchip change of ownership details etc will be emailed to new owners AFTER successful completion of the trial period and NOT BEFORE.
ALL ex LLs animals are always welcome back and preferred to be SURRENDERED back to us should they ever need rehoming. This requires new owners to complete the surrender form on the website and NO REFUNDS are given outside of the trial period. As with any incoming animals we can only help if a carer is available or found.
ADOPTION PROCESS ⤵️
When your foster animal is available for adoption and receives adoption interest or applications, you will be sent these via private message on messenger.
Some animals are extremely popular and will receive a high number of applications, please go through applications ASAP and choose the MOST SUITED as your FIRST AND ONLY PREFERENCE!
Contacting multiple applicants for meet and greets becomes messy and many people are annoyed at driving for meet and greets, getting their hopes up and then being told another applicant was chosen.
Please ONLY call and arrange ONE meet and greet at a time!
If that one falls through you can then call the next most suited and so on.
When you arrange a meet and greet you MUST inform your Coordinator ASAP, we have an Adoption Information email that is sent to potential adopters PRIOR to meet and greets.
Please inform your Coordinator ASAP of any changes, i.e an applicant pulls out or isn’t going ahead with the adoption.
All successful applicants are sent an INVOICE from our Adoption Coordinator that requires payment IN FULL BEFORE any animal leaves our care.
No exceptions.
CASH PAYMENTS ⤵️
Some people prefer to pay cash for adoptions, while this is not preferable it is acceptable providing that you DEPOSIT or TRANSFER the adoption fee to our bank account ASAP!
We cannot wait days, weeks or months for adoption fees.
our bank details are:
Commonwealth Bank
Account Name: Little Legs Dog & Cat Rescue Qld Inc
Account Number: 10273446
BSB: 064413.
